Anika’s Zen and the Power of Gratitude. Right here for you, weekly, every Sunday.

I have been thinking about vibrations a lot lately. Perhaps, it is in part, thanks to the pandemic. It has given me pause to reflect on what I am attracting and continue to attract, whether I am doing it consciously or unconsciously.

The Chopra Foundation defines a vibration as a state of being, the atmosphere, or the energetic quality of a person, place, thought, or thing. This ‘feeling’ has always been in us, to trust or not to trust something or someone. It’s the reason, perhaps, babies cry when some people hold them and sleep comfortably when others do the same – even though both sets of people may be strangers who have never met the baby before.

Vibrating Higher

Have you ever met someone for the very first time and felt like there is something special there, drawing you closer? An association perhaps that seems to transcend moments, countries and sometimes, time itself? And then there are others, who, no matter how many times you meet them, you know there is nothing there, with every meeting only further proving the ‘nothingness’? Something feels “off” though you just can’t put your finger on it? This feeling is the same reason why we enter some alleys and avoid others, why we are attracted to some things in a store while not to others.

Of course, a large part of it could be colors and tastes defined by our culture and background, but much has to do with vibrations.

Vibrations

Albert Einstein is known to have said, “Everything in life is vibration.” We are only beginning to understand this now.

Physics has shown us that everything that makes up the universe, is made up of molecules vibrating at different speeds. This includes trees, bodies, rocks, animals, thoughts, and emotions. Human vibrations are composed of all things from physical matter to the way we communicate the thoughts we think. And in vibrations, some molecules vibrate faster, and some vibrate slower. This causes higher vibrations and lower vibrations. Even objects that appear to be stationary are in fact vibrating, oscillating and resonating at various frequencies.

Have you ever seen that pendulum experiment? The one that starts off with balls at different frequencies and how they suddenly start aligning? It happens in real life too! Something really amazing happens when different things/objects come into proximity. After some time, they all start vibrating at the same frequency. You start ‘syncing’ up in ways that cannot fully be described. But what you are really doing without realizing it, is, you are aligning. You are ‘vibe-ing’, you are resonating together.

When musicians do it, they make music. I wonder when human beings sync up, what great things happen? What great things can happen?

In Sync

Vibrating Higher

Stephen Strogatz, the author of the book Sync, talks about the tendency to synchronize and how it may be the most mysterious and pervasive drive in all of nature. Some of the most brilliant minds in the universe, including Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Norbert Wiener, Brian Josephson, and Arthur Winfree, have been intrigued by it for a long, long time.

Strogatz, is a leading mathematician in the fields of chaos and complexity theory. He explains how enormous systems can synchronize themselves, from the electrons in a superconductor to the pacemaker cells in our hearts. He shows that although these phenomena might seem unrelated on the surface, at a deeper level there is a connection, forged by the unifying power of mathematics.

Another example he gives is the phenomenon of “sync” (synchrony) in fireflies. Certain species start flashing their little fires in sync in large gatherings of fireflies, in ways that can be difficult to explain under traditional approaches.

Look up at the moon. Science shows that its rotation is exactly synced with its orbit around the Earth such that we always see the same face.

The Romance of Resonance

There is nothing as phenomenal as the feeling of being in ‘sync’ with something or someone. It could be a person, a place or simply, a moment. For me, many times, it’s the water and me when I swim. I am completely in sync with the water and it in turn, is one with me, vibrating at the same frequency. Sometimes I feel it in my car, on an open road, listening to a certain song. Little things can give us clues on what we are in ‘sync ‘with and what we are not.

German neurophysiologist Pascal Fries has also explored this phenomenon. In his highly cited work over the last two decades, Pascal has studied gamma, theta, and beta waves and how they work together in the brain to produce various types of human consciousness. These wave names refer to the speed of electrical oscillations in the various brain regions, as measured by electrodes placed on the outside of the skull. Theta and beta are significantly slower than gamma waves. But the three work together to produce, or at least facilitate various types of human consciousness.

Pascal Fries refers to this concept as “communication through coherence” or CTC. According to him, synchronization, in terms of shared electrical oscillation rates, allows for smooth communication between neurons and groups of neurons.

Resonance is a beautiful thing. One that takes effort but proven by both physicists and mathematicians. Like attracts like. Your vibration attracts resonant vibrations.

Frequency to Reality

Remember Einstein who said, “Everything in life is a vibration.”? He also went on to say, “Match the frequency of the reality you want, and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.”

There are others who are now aligning (pun intended, of course!) with this concept. Whatever vibration you express, you’ll draw those experiences and people that match these vibrations.

Spiritual teacher Panache Desai says, “What you vibrate out into the world, the universe echoes back. Vibrational transformation is a powerful internal process that addresses embedded, unresolved vibrations. Dense emotional content and conditioning changes them from a dissonant vibration into a harmonious vibration through the conscious acceptance of the root cause of the unconscious dissonance. That is why I say a shift in energy is always followed by a change in reality. Your life is an exact reflection of your overall vibrational frequency. To experience authentic transformation is to find a new way of being and relating in the world, one that is anchored in your soul.”

Constant Energy

Vibrating Higher

Our days (and often, nights) are full of exposure to constant energy. Energy from animate and inanimate objects. Which means, we are constantly in a state of giving and receiving energy, understanding, and aligning with the frequencies of that which makes up our environment, our universe.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, we respond to these frequencies, vibrations and constant flow of energy. Physically, our bodies respond at a cellular level. All the energy that we are exposed to, causes a signal to pass between our body and brain. Dr. Joe Dispenza, a neuroscientist, has undertaken revolutionary research into quantum physics, epigenetics, molecular biology and neuro-cardiology to open new possibilities for self-healing and self-actualized empowerment. He says, “we have the capacity to tune in to frequencies beyond our material world and receive more orderly coherent streams of consciousness and energy; that we can intentionally change our brain chemistry to initiate profoundly mystical transcendental experiences; and how, if we do this enough times, we can develop the skill of creating a more efficient, balanced, healthy body, a more unlimited mind, and greater access to the realms of spiritual truth.”

The author of  New York Times bestseller Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing The Uncommon, his research reveals that if we maintain ‘incoherent’ emotional states for prolonged periods of time, they can lead to us feeling imbalanced, fearful and full of doubt.

The answer? Vibrate higher!

Bending the Universe

The fact that we are all energy and vibrations, is something that I learnt very late in life. First, I had to discover it. Then I had to learn, embrace and most importantly, trust it. And finally, I had to apply it.

And apply it I did. It changed what I started attracting into my life, whether it was in the form of people, places, moments and even, opportunities. Once I understood and got in touch my vibration, I started practicing vibrating higher, resisting the easy path of the downward spiral of lower frequencies.

It is extremely hard and even harder to practice vibrating at a higher frequency. But I have learnt that we have the power to shift our vibrations, and thereby, change our reality. It does not happen overnight. But it does happen, regardless of present circumstances. I have done it; I have seen it and I have put it into action.

Silence helps. Being in conscious silence helps to get more in tune with our vibrations and the vibrations of those around us. Panache Desai says, “When we change our energy, the Universe bends to meet us in a brand-new way.”

Can we bend the universe in our own ways? In ways that we never thought possible? I say, take a lesson right out of our moon. If she can make the tides ebb and flow simply based on her vibrations, our universe can’t be far behind!
