What’s an Uber Blend?
I do a little mental eye-roll (too old to actually do it!) when I hear the word “super foods”. Aren’t all REAL foods from Mother Nature super foods? Granted, I wouldn’t waste my time eating iceberg lettuce, and I certainly prefer eating dark/bright colored vegetables and greens over dull colors (if you want to know why, read this article). But, eating a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, whole grains and nuts will provide your body with the best nourishment.
I call this mix an “Uberfood” blend instead. Why? It is uber-tasty, uber-easy-to-make, uber-long-lasting-without-going-rancid and uber-versatile. Moreover, I’d also add that it can be an uber-sneaky food that you can add into foods for the picky palates.
This energizing, nourishing and delicious ready-for-your-blender, or top-it-on-anything is a mix of five of the world’s most nutrient-rich whole foods: Hemp, Raw Cacao (don’t mistake this for cocoa, which is not that healthy!), Flax Seeds, Chia Seeds and Maca Root Powder. The robust mix provides you with natural strength and energy to power through your day. Best of all, the blend of nutrient rich whole foods is vegan, gluten-free and raw too! Real Nutrition from Real Food.
Where Do I Buy Ingredients for the All Purpose “Uberfood” Blend?
I buy mostly online, since I don’t have to go from store to store. Here are some of my favorite brands that I invite you to try out. I have also added some tidbits that you may find interesting about these super foods:
Maca Root Powder:
I was introduced to this super food while traveling in Peru. They grow maca in the high mountains of the Andes. The roots are harvested, dried and powdered. I have read about Chinese maca, but I suggest you stick to the original Peruvian-grown maca. Click here to find good quality maca online. To read up about maca root, click here.
Chia Seeds:
I consider this one of my top super foods. Chia seeds have been quite ubiquitous in modern day recipes. Click here to buy online. See my Chia Seed Pudding for ideas on how to use these versatile seeds. For those that can’t find chia seeds in your country, you can substitute with tulsi seeds, also known as subja or falooda seeds.
Hemp Seeds:
Did you know that Hemp (Canabis sativa sativa) and has been cultivated for thousands of years as a source of fiber, edible seeds, edible oil, lubricant, and even as a fuel? There is a tremendous confusion about hemp, mostly related to its intoxicating sibling, marijuana (Canabis sativa indica). Yes, eating hemp seeds is legal. However, the U.S. government makes no distinction between the different sub-species of cannabis plants. All of the hemp in the U.S. is imported. Click here to buy online hemp seeds.
Raw Cacao:
Cocoa and Cacao may sound similar, but both of them are unique when it comes to taste, nutrition, and cost. Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can consume, which means it is raw and much less processed than cocoa powder or chocolate bars. The cacao fruit tree is known as Theobroma Cacao. It produces cacao pods which are cracked open to release cacao beans. From there, cacao beans can be processed a few different ways.
Did you know that powdered Cacao contains more fiber and calories than cocoa powder since more of the nutrients from the whole bean are still intact? Cocoa is the term used to refer to the heated form of cacao that you probably grew up buying at the store in the form of cocoa powder. Buy raw cacao here.
I urge you to try out my Avocado Chocolate Mousse that is made from raw cacao. It is to DIE for!
Flax Seeds:
Flax seeds are sometimes called linseeds. They are small, brown, tan or golden-colored seeds that are the richest sources of a plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and one of the highest magnesium foods in the world! Note: These seeds are best consumed ground as our bodies cannot access the nutrients if they are eaten whole and they will pass through undigested. For online purchase, click here.
Recipes to use this Uber-Food Blend:
There are several ways you can use this delicious blend. You can add it to your favorite juices or milks, with fresh or frozen fruits and blend to create a thick, creamy and fruity smoothie. You can add this mix to desserts or sprinkle it into yogurt and ice cream. Use your imagination! Here are a few ways I’ve used this blend in my own recipes:
- Kefir – add and blend
- Banana Avocado Smoothie – add before blending
- DIY Almond Milk – add before blending
- Whole Grain Hot Cereal – sprinkle a teaspoon of the blend, before eating
- Chia Seed Pudding – add as needed
- Kale-Pear-Turnip-Goat-Cheese Salad – mix with the salad
- Colorfully Crunchy Strawberry Grape Kale Salad – mix with the salad
- Zucchini Banana Bread – add before baking
- Harvest Salad with Spinach-Apple-Pomegranate – mix with the salad
Hemp and flax seeds are high in protein, omega essential fatty acids (“good” fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects); cacao is antioxidant-rich; chia seeds are loaded with fiber, protein, Omega-3 fatty acids and various micro-nutrients; and maca root benefits the endocrine system. Together, this simple mix creates an excellent, energizing and nourishing supply of vegetarian protein in a form that can be readily digested and absorbed by the body.
