I have just one word to describe Sesame Chutney Powder-delicious! I’m so hooked on to this spicy, somewhat salty, flavorful spice powder. Ever since I started making this powder, I’ve made sure I have a jar handy in my refrigerator. It is so yummy with steamed brown rice and ghee, just the thought of it makes my mouth water! My cousin Sangita is so fond of this, she just keeps it by her side and pops a spoonful at a time, like a snack. I do that too, sometimes. It is so addictive!
Sesame Seeds
Obviously, we’re all familiar with sesame seeds in bread, rolls, pretzels, bread sticks, crackers and so on. In the Indian cuisine however, sesame seeds are used in curries, savory snacks, sweets, dry chutney powders and wet chutneys. Sesame Laddus (sweet candy made with sesame seeds and jaggery) are delicious and very popular in India.
Chutney Powders
Indian cuisine has a variety of dry spice powders. These are either exclusively made for specific dishes (like Rasam Powder and Sambar Powder). I enjoy Kharam Podi with steaming hot idlis – I hardly ever use it for anything else! Sesame Chutney Powder for instance, can be had by itself, or as a curry powder. One of the most versatile spice powders is South Indian Curry Powder, that I use in most of my dry, veggie sauté recipes.
Sesame Chutney Powder
If you’re looking for a quick, easy, flavorful spice mix, this recipe is a must. Just 3 main ingredients, sesame seeds, urad dal and dry chili peppers are what you need and of course, salt to taste. Sauté, cool, blend. Just 3 steps, and you’re done. How easy is that?!
Sesame seeds are an excellent source of copper and a very good source of manganese; they are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc, molybdenum, selenium, and dietary fiber. Because they rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid, Sesame seeds are known to be helpful in lowering LDL or “bad cholesterol” and increase HDL or “good cholesterol” in the blood.

Sesame Chutney Powder

- 1 Cup Sesame Seeds - White Variety
- 1/3 Cup Urad Dal - (Split Black Gram)
- 6 Chilis Dry Red Chili - Large
- 1/2 Teaspoon Olive Oil
- 1 Teaspoon Sea Salt - Or To Taste
Instructions
- Make sure you have urad dal, sesame seeds and chili peppers handy.
- Set IP on 'sauté' mode, add oil and wait for 'hot' sign. Roast sesame seeds, urad dal and red chili for 2-3 minutes to ensure you get rid of the moisture. Make sure you do not burn the spices. They need to brown ever so slightly.
- Set aside to cool in a large plate for about 10 minutes.
- Transfer into a blender. Add salt.
- Blend to a coarse powder.
- Transfer to a glass jar with an air tight lid and store in a cool dry place.

When do you add the oil and salt?
Hello! The oil is added just before roasting the dals and spices. The salt is added just before blending.
